Statistics have evolved in close interaction with the emergence of the modern state. How are they continuing to evolve now when:

·         Individualism and market liberalism are dominant ideologies?

·         Computer power is growing exponentially?

·         we are protective of our personal data?

This project examines current statistical practices in several areas, each with particular tensions between individual and aggregate perspectives.

Book in production: An anthology based on papers from the May ’07 workshop is just two proofreading steps away from release. It should be available Summer 2010. The title will be “The Mutual Construction of Statistics and Society”. For further information, see http://www.routledge.com/

Calendar

May 7, 2010: Dissertation defense, Jon Hovland.

This will be the third PhD completed in this project. Luisa Farah Schwartzman and Johanne Yttri Dahl have already successfully defended their dissertations.
