Statistics have evolved in close interaction with the emergence of the modern state. How are they continuing to evolve now when:

· Individualism and market liberalism are dominant ideologies?

· Computer power is growing exponentially?

· we are protective of our personal data?

This project examines current statistical practices in several areas, each with particular tensions between individual and aggregate perspectives.

Calendar May 7, 2010: Dissertation defense, Jon Hovland. This will be the third PhD completed in this project. Luisa Farah Schwartzman and Johanne Yttri Dahl have already successfully defended their dissertations.
