Katie Brown is our new visiting fellow

Katie Brown (from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) is awarded a fellowship for visiting researchers throught the NFR BILAT scheme. Katie Brown will collaborate with the project and visit Trondheim from October 2011 through March 2012.

New book out now

Shanto Iyengar is new Adjunct Professor at NTNU, Trondheim

Professor Shanto Iyengar (from Stanford University) officially join the staff at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU in a position as Adjunct Professor (20%). Professor Iyengar will teach a graduate course on "Media, Opinion and Political Behavior" every fall, starting in September 2011. The course will be offered as an intensive course over one week and is open to NTNU students (MA/PhD) as well as PhD students from other institutions.

RIP, George Rabinowitz  

George Rabinowitz died suddenly of a heart attack on Friday 18 March. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Stuart Elaine Mcdonald, who together with George was spending time in Trondheim as a visiting researcher. Our condolences also goes to their two sons, as well as other relatives, friends and colleagues throughout the US and Europe.

Guest Lecture: George Rabinowitz on Political Polarization in the US 01.03.2011

George Rabinowitz, from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who is a visiting researcher on the project throught the NFR BILAT scheme, is giving a guest lecture to NTNU students on Tuesday 1 March 2011 at 14.15 in Auditorium D10, Dragvoll University Centre. His talk is titled: Political Polarization in the US.

New Project Member: Ann Iren Jamtøy start 15.02.11

Ann Irem Jamtøy (from NTNU, Trondheim) officially join the project as a new researcher. Jamtøy has previously collaborated with the project while working on her PhD theses in political science.

Career move: Kjersti Thorbjørsnrud as new Project leader of MOM

Kjersti Thorbjørsnrud leaves Trondheim to start her new full time position as project leader of the Mediation of Migration project (MOM). She will continue her collaboration with the media systems project.

Career move: Zan Strabac as new Associate Professor 

Zan Strabac has been offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at  Sør-Trøndelag University College/ Trondheim Business School. He will keep a 20 position at the project and still be affiliated with NTNU Social Research.

Book proposal accepted by Routledge.

Based on extremely positive reviews of our book proposal How Media Inform Democracy. A Comparative Approach Routledge have agreed to publish our project book. Successful application: VAM project on Mediation of Migration.

In cooperation with scholars at the University of Oslo, New York Univeristy Steinhardt, and the University of Zurich

Kjersti Thorbjørsnrud and Toril Aalberg have received founding for a four year research project throught the Research Council of Norways Programme on Welfare, Work and Migration (VAM). A central aim of the project is to offer knowledge about the largely hidden mechanisms shaping the news on migration. A part of the project will consist of  comparative content analysis which can reveal how news accounts about migration is framed in Norway and in countries with contrasting media systems and immigration histories.

Successful application: Kjersti Thorbjørnsrud

In cooperation with the project Kjersti Thorbjørsnrud have been awarded a fellowships as a visiting researchers throught the NFR BILAT scheme. The scheme is designed to give research funding a wider international reach, and was established in response to the need to increase internationalisation of Norwegian research. Thorbjørnsrud will visit New York University Steinhardt in spring 2010.

New Project Member: Kjersti Thorbjørnsrud start 01.06.09

Kjersti Thorbjørnsrud (from the University of Oslo) join the project as new postdoctoral researcher. Thorbjørnsrud has a PhD in communication (2009) and a MA in political science (2001) both from the University of Oslo.

Successful application: NTNU mobility fellowship for young excellent researchers to Toril Aalberg

Toril Aalberg has been granted a NTNU mobility fellowship of NOK 81 450,-  to cover the cost of her travel and stay at Stanford Univeristy. Aalberg will spend July and August 2009 as a Visiting Researcher at the Political Communication Lab. The purpose of her stay is to work on a new set of experiments with Prof. Shanto Iyengar. These experiments will study race stereotypes and the effect on policy attitudes and party support across countries.

NTNU Social Research AS invites applications for research assistants who can assist the project members with coding of news content (TV and newspapers). The news content to be coded will be in Norwegian, Swedish and English. The positions will be based on man-hours worked and be relatively flexible. In cooperation with the project Stuart Elaine Macdonald and George Rabinowitz  (U of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) have been awarded fellowships for visiting researchers throught the NFR BILAT scheme. New Project Members: Leppink, Brekken and Fladmoe start 01.09.09

Egbert Leppink (U of Twente), Tove Brekken (NTNU) and Audun Fladmoe (NTNU) join the project as new PhD Research Fellows. Leppink will work on media consumption and knowledge gaps. Brekken will work on the information value of news output across media systems. Fladmoe will work on media coverage of educational governance and it's influence on public perceptions.

Successful application: Toril Aalberg recive OYI award from Research Council of Norway (NFR)

Outstanding Young Investigators (OYI)/"Yngre fremragende forskere" (YFF) award from the Research Council of Norway is given to Toril Aalberg. She is one of 20 applicants who succeeded in a highly competitive round for 2007 (179 proposals were submitted). The OYI scheme is designed to enable talented young researchers within all disciplines to realise their potential for international excellence in research and develop competence leading large projects. The scheme is part of the RCN's effort to enhance the quality of Norwegian research. This is the secound round of OYI awards from NFR. The first round of awards were announced in 2003.
