The research group on forced migration at the Department of Geography, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) was established in 1995. During 1997 several projects were launched, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and the Nordic Africa Institute. Our aim is to formulate broader, and analytically more applicable, definitions of forced migration. We also want to make visible the connections between displacement, war, environment and development. Theoretically, we develop actor-oriented approaches for the study of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

• Who can be defined as IDPs and refugees?

• What kind of images do we present of IDPs and refugees?

• What are the situation and experience of non-Convention refugees?

• What is the relationship between different types of forced migrants (IDPs, returnees, refugees, relocated persons)?

• How can causes and consequences of flight be identified and explained?

• How could complex humanitarian emergencies be understood?

• How do IDPs and refugees develop livelihood strategies individually and in cooperation with human agencies and governments?

• What are the links between war, displacement, environment and development?
